5 new additions to Damson Cottage Garden

THE CHICKS HAVE ARRIVED – yippee! They are sooooooooo cute. I have had a very eventful chick related day. This morning one of the eggs we were incubating hatched – here are the photos… (I will post my wobbly video of the hatching when I figure out how to load it to the site!)

Bantam pekin egg hatching

Here s/he is!!

Hatching chicks

S/he popped out of the egg within 20 minutes of cracking the shell.

Brand new Pekin

Unfortunately (possibly due to our power cut) only one egg hatched! This was almost a disaster as chicks are social critters and don’t like to be alone. I spent the morning phoning every chicken breeder in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Essex and Hertfordshire! I finally found a lovely lady in Welwyn who had some newly hatched chicks to keep our little chap company. We therefore have one Lemon Pekin (that we hatched), two bantam Light Sussex and two Silver-Laced Hamburgs.

The little chap to the left is the one we hatched, s/he is sooooo tiny and cute! The grey and black ones are the Hambergs and the yellow chicks to the right are the Light Sussex chicks.

The Damson Cottage Garden chicks

We don’t know if they are male or female yet but we need names for them. Sarah suggested the cast of Frasier – Frasier, Niles, Martin, Roz and Daphne! Let me know your suggestions! Jane

Just got back from a weekend away, fabulous to see at least one chick survived your power cut ordeal and you have ‘shelled’ out for some pen pals. They are on solids too! Cracking stuff.
